The outline for this homily was:

  • The invitation to enter Jesus’ prayer as he asked Peter, James, John and the other apostles.
  • Three parts of Jesus prayer: relationship to the Father, trust in his omnipotence, and the desire to do the Father’s will in everything.
  • Our response to the invitation in prayer and in life. In prayer, we’re called to see to do the Father’s will on earth just as it is done in heaven, for doing the Father’s will is the beginning of heaven on earth. That’s the way we’re strengthened to be faithful in the supreme moment, when we go out with Jesus to meet our betrayers.
  • The Mass is the great school of what Jesus teaches in Gethsemane, linking what he did in the Upper Room to what he did on Golgotha, turning his whole being to the Father, trusting in him, and aligning his will, as we do this in his memory.
