Landry<br \/>\nSt. Bernadette Parish, Fall River, MA<br \/>\nMonday of the 20th Week of Ordinary Time, Year I<br \/>\nMemorial of St. John Eudes<br \/>\nAugust 19, 2013<\/p>\n<p><em>To listen to an audio recording of this homily please click here:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-4434-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.catholicpreaching.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8.19.13-Homily-1.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicpreaching.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8.19.13-Homily-1.mp3\">http:\/\/www.catholicpreaching.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/8.19.13-Homily-1.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the homily the following points were made:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Despite the infidelity of the Israelites in the Holy Land after they had repeatedly vowed to be faithful to their end of the covenant (Saturday, August 17), we see God&#8217;s continued fidelity in sending them judges to liberate them from the snares into which their sinful behavior led them.<\/li>\n<li>In the Gospel of the Rich Young Man, when he asks about having eternal life, Jesus first responds that it is a life of fidelity to the commandments. He seems sincerely to believe that he has kept them perfectly from his youth, but Jesus&#8217; changing the order implies that he may not be fulfilling all his duties to his parents or truly loving his neighbor as he loves himself. We see that when Jesus asks him to sell and give all of his possessions to his poor neighbors, he balks. To his question as to the path of perfection, he believes he&#8217;s missing something, but Jesus basically says he has too much and that he needs to give what he has away. The path to spiritual wealth is through subtraction of material things, not primarily through acquisition.<\/li>\n<li>We see these truths lived out in the life of St. John Eudes, who over the course of his 79 years, preached 110 missions trying to bring people to conversion, to understand the true wealth and seek the path of holiness, which is the path of perfection. He was the great theologian behind the liturgical devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary even before Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. He tried to have our hearts become rich through union with Christ&#8217;s heart. That great loving fusion of hearts takes place most in the Mass, for which St. John Eudes said we&#8217;d need an eternity to prepare, another eternity to celebrate and a third to give thanks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The readings for today&#8217;s Mass were:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Reading 1<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/judges\/2:11\">JGS 2:11-19<\/a><\/h4>\n<div>The children of Israel offended the LORD by serving the Baals.<br \/>\nAbandoning the LORD, the God of their fathers,<br \/>\nwho led them out of the land of Egypt,<br \/>\nthey followed the other gods of the various nations around them,<br \/>\nand by their worship of these gods provoked the LORD.Because they had thus abandoned him and served Baal and the Ashtaroth,<br \/>\nthe anger of the LORD flared up against Israel,<br \/>\nand he delivered them over to plunderers who despoiled them.<br \/>\nHe allowed them to fall into the power of their enemies round about<br \/>\nwhom they were no longer able to withstand.<br \/>\nWhatever they undertook, the LORD turned into disaster for them,<br \/>\nas in his warning he had sworn he would do,<br \/>\ntill they were in great distress.<br \/>\nEven when the LORD raised up judges to deliver them<br \/>\nfrom the power of their despoilers,<br \/>\nthey did not listen to their judges,<br \/>\nbut abandoned themselves to the worship of other gods.<br \/>\nThey were quick to stray from the way their fathers had taken,<br \/>\nand did not follow their example of obedience<br \/>\nto the commandments of the LORD.<br \/>\nWhenever the LORD raised up judges for them, he would be with the judge<br \/>\nand save them from the power of their enemies<br \/>\nas long as the judge lived;<br \/>\nit was thus the LORD took pity on their distressful cries<br \/>\nof affliction under their oppressors.<br \/>\nBut when the judge died,<br \/>\nthey would relapse and do worse than their ancestors,<br \/>\nfollowing other gods in service and worship,<br \/>\nrelinquishing none of their evil practices or stubborn conduct.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h4>Responsorial Psalm<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/psalms\/106:34\">PS 106:34-35, 36-37, 39-40, 43AB AND 44<\/a><\/h4>\n<div>R. (4a)\u00a0<strong>Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.<\/strong><br \/>\nThey did not exterminate the peoples,<br \/>\nas the LORD had commanded them,<br \/>\nBut mingled with the nations<br \/>\nand learned their works.<br \/>\nR.\u00a0<strong>Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.<\/strong><br \/>\nThey served their idols,<br \/>\nwhich became a snare for them.<br \/>\nThey sacrificed their sons<br \/>\nand their daughters to demons.<br \/>\nR.\u00a0<strong>Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.<\/strong><br \/>\nThey became defiled by their works,<br \/>\nand wanton in their crimes.<br \/>\nAnd the LORD grew angry with his people,<br \/>\nand abhorred his inheritance.<br \/>\nR.\u00a0<strong>Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.<\/strong><br \/>\nMany times did he rescue them,<br \/>\nbut they embittered him with their counsels.<br \/>\nYet he had regard for their affliction<br \/>\nwhen he heard their cry.<br \/>\nR.\u00a0<strong>Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h4>Gospel<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/matthew\/19:16\">MT 19:16-22<\/a><\/h4>\n<div>A young man approached Jesus and said,<br \/>\n\u201cTeacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?\u201d<br \/>\nHe answered him, \u201cWhy do you ask me about the good?<br \/>\nThere is only One who is good.<br \/>\nIf you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.\u201d<br \/>\nHe asked him, \u201cWhich ones?\u201d<br \/>\nAnd Jesus replied, \u201c<em>You shall not kill;<br \/>\nyou shall not commit adultery;<br \/>\nyou shall not steal;<br \/>\nyou shall not bear false witness;<br \/>\nhonor your father and your mother;<br \/>\nand you shall love your neighbor as yourself.<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nThe young man said to him,<br \/>\n\u201cAll of these I have observed.
