Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem,
\nsummoning their elders, their leaders,
\ntheir judges, and their officers.
\nWhen they stood in ranks before God,
\nJoshua addressed all the people:
\n\u201cIf it does not please you to serve the LORD,
\ndecide today whom you will serve,
\nthe gods your fathers served beyond the River
\nor the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling.
\nAs for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But the people answered,
\n\u201cFar be it from us to forsake the LORD
\nfor the service of other gods.
\nFor it was the LORD, our God,
\nwho brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt,

\nHe performed those great miracles before our very eyes
\nand protected us along our entire journey
\nand among the peoples through whom we passed.

Brothers and sisters:
\nBe subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.
\nWives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.
\nFor the husband is head of his wife
\njust as Christ is head of the church,
\nhe himself the savior of the body.
\nAs the church is subordinate to Christ,
\nso wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.
\nHusbands, love your wives,
\neven as Christ loved the church
\nand handed himself over for her to sanctify her,
\ncleansing her by the bath of water with the word,
\nthat he might present to himself the church in splendor,
\nwithout spot or wrinkle or any such thing,
\nthat she might be holy and without blemish.
\nSo also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.

Many of Jesus\u2019 disciples who were listening said,
\n\u201cThis saying is hard; who can accept it?\u201d
\nSince Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this,
\nhe said to them, \u201cDoes this shock you?
\nWhat if you were to see the Son of Man ascending
\nto where he was before?
\nIt is the spirit that gives life,
\nwhile the flesh is of no avail.
\nThe words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.
\nBut there are some of you who do not believe.\u201d
\nJesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe
\nand the one who would betray him.
\nAnd he said,
\n\u201cFor this reason I have told you that no one can come to me
\nunless it is granted him by my Father.\u201dAs a result of this,
\nmany of his disciples returned to their former way of life
\nand no longer accompanied him.
\nJesus then said to the Twelve, \u201cDo you also want to leave?\u201d
\nSimon Peter answered him, \u201cMaster, to whom shall we go?
