Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent envoys to Hezekiah
\nwith this message:
\n\u201cThus shall you say to Hezekiah, king of Judah:
\n\u2018Do not let your God on whom you rely deceive you
\nby saying that Jerusalem will not be handed over
\nto the king of Assyria.
\nYou have heard what the kings of Assyria have done
\nto all other countries: they doomed them!
\nWill you, then, be saved?\u2019\u201d
\nHezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it;
\nthen he went up to the temple of the LORD,
\nand spreading it out before him,
\nhe prayed in the LORD\u2019s presence:
\n\u201cO LORD, God of Israel, enthroned upon the cherubim!
\nYou alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth.
\nYou have made the heavens and the earth.
\nIncline your ear, O LORD, and listen!
\nOpen your eyes, O LORD, and see!
\nHear the words of Sennacherib which he sent to taunt the living God.
\nTruly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations
\nand their lands, and cast their gods into the fire;
\nthey destroyed them because they were not gods,
\nbut the work of human hands, wood and stone.
\nTherefore, O LORD, our God, save us from the power of this man,
\nthat all the kingdoms of the earth may know
\nthat you alone, O LORD, are God.\u201d
\nThen Isaiah, son of Amoz, sent this message to Hezekiah:
\n\u201cThus says the LORD, the God of Israel,
\nin answer to your prayer for help against Sennacherib, king of Assyria:
\nI have listened!
\nThis is the word the LORD has spoken concerning him:
\n\u201c\u2018She despises you, laughs you to scorn,
\nthe virgin daughter Zion!
\nBehind you she wags her head,
\ndaughter Jerusalem.
\n\u201c\u2018For out of Jerusalem shall come a remnant,
\nand from Mount Zion, survivors.
\nThe zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.\u2019
\n\u201cTherefore, thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria:
\n\u2018He shall not reach this city, nor shoot an arrow at it,
\nnor come before it with a shield,
\nnor cast up siege-works against it.
\nHe shall return by the same way he came,
\nwithout entering the city, says the LORD.
\nI will shield and save this city for my own sake,
\nand for the sake of my servant David.\u2019”<\/div>\n
That night the angel of the LORD went forth and struck down
\none hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp.
\nSo Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, broke camp,
\nand went back home to Nineveh.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
