The quiet hero of the book is the Archangel Raphael, whose name means \u201cThe Healing of God.\u201d We see in the book how God heals both Sarah, as we saw yesterday, and Tobit as we see today. He heals them after some suffering, to perfect them who were already good and virtuous. That\u2019s an important point. They were both \u201cjust,\u201d and were permitted by God to suffer in order to help them both advance in faith. God already had set up his medicine for them in the facts of the case: he had had Tobit earn and bury money in Media so that, after Tobit couldn\u2019t go himself, Tobias could, could get bitten by the fish with the healing properties, could meet Sarah and become an instrument of the healing of each of them. We see the particularly \u201cgalling\u201d way Tobit was healed in today\u2019s Gospel, by his son\u2019s smearing his cataracted eyes with gall from the fish who had bitten him, the same fish that had supplied the heart and liver that was burned to heal Sarah and Tobias from the wiles of the pagan god of lust in this allegory. There\u2019s a clear sacramental\u00a0allusion in this healing by something a little gross, much like Jesus would later heal someone of blindness by wiping saliva on his eyes. As soon as Tobit was cured, he rejoiced that he could see his son. He could in fact see much more clearly than he did before he was blinded four years earlier by bird droppings. His vision had been enriched by faith.<\/li>\n<li>We see Jesus seeking to do a similar healing in the Gospel. He was trying to help the scribes and those around him in the Temple see what God the Father had revealed to St. Peter at Caesarea Philippi, that the Messiah would also be God. That\u2019s what was happening in Jesus\u2019 question, that David who traditionally is understood to be the one who composed Psalm 110 that Jesus quotes, would call the Messiah \u2014 who would be his descendent according to the flesh \u2014 \u201cLord.\u201d That\u2019s precisely who Jesus was, not merely David\u2019s descendent according to the flesh, but also his Lord and Creator. Jesus was opening the eyes of the minds of his contemporaries to a much deeper understanding of who the Messiah is, to help them to be able to embrace better what was coming within a few days in his Passion.<\/li>\n<li>As we receive Jesus, two days before the celebration of Corpus Christi, God wants to heal and open our eyes to see the Eucharist not routinely but with a new vision, especially in terms of how we are called to center our whole life on Jesus whom we receive, to become living walking monstrances carrying God within out to the streets here of Manhattan. St. Ignatius of Antioch called Jesus in the Eucharist \u201cthe medicine of immortality.\u201d This is the greatest source of God\u2019s healing, which he places not on our eyes but within us to heal not just our vision but so much more, making it possible for us to become the \u201cgall\u201d that can go out, attached to Him and all his healing power, to help others to see anew as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>The readings for today\u2019s Mass were:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Reading 1\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/tobit\/11:5\">TB 11:5-17<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">Anna sat watching the road by which her son was to come.<br \/>\nWhen she saw him coming, she exclaimed to his father,<br \/>\n\u201cTobit, your son is coming, and the man who traveled with him!\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry\">Raphael said to Tobiah before he reached his father:<br \/>\n\u201cI am certain that his eyes will be opened.<br \/>\nSmear the fish gall on them.<br \/>\nThis medicine will make the cataracts shrink and peel off from his eyes;<br \/>\nthen your father will again be able to see the light of day.\u201d<br \/>\nThen Anna ran up to her son, threw her arms around him,<br \/>\nand said to him,<br \/>\n\u201cNow that I have seen you again, son, I am ready to die!\u201d<br \/>\nAnd she sobbed aloud.<br \/>\nTobit got up and stumbled out through the courtyard gate.<br \/>\nTobiah went up to him with the fish gall in his hand,<br \/>\nand holding him firmly, blew into his eyes.<br \/>\n\u201cCourage, father,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nNext he smeared the medicine on his eyes, and it made them smart.<br \/>\nThen, beginning at the corners of Tobit\u2019s eyes,<br \/>\nTobiah used both hands to peel off the cataracts.<br \/>\nWhen Tobit saw his son, he threw his arms around him and wept.<br \/>\nHe exclaimed, \u201cI can see you, son, the light of my eyes!\u201d<br \/>\nThen he said:\u201cBlessed be God,<br \/>\nand praised be his great name,<br \/>\nand blessed be all his holy angels.<br \/>\nMay his holy name be praised<br \/>\nthroughout all the ages,<br \/>\nBecause it was he who scourged me,<br \/>\nand it is he who has had mercy on me.<br \/>\nBehold, I now see my son Tobiah!\u201d<br \/>\nThen Tobit went back in, rejoicing and praising God with full voice<br \/>\nfor everything that had happened.<br \/>\nTobiah told his father that<br \/>\nthe Lord God had granted him a successful journey;<br \/>\nthat he had brought back the money;<br \/>\nand that he had married Raguel\u2019s daughter Sarah,<br \/>\nwho would arrive shortly,<br \/>\nfor she was approaching the gate of Nineveh.<br \/>\nTobit and Anna rejoiced<br \/>\nand went out to the gate of Nineveh<br \/>\nto meet their daughter-in-law.<br \/>\nWhen the people of Nineveh saw Tobit walking along briskly,<br \/>\nwith no one leading him by the hand, they were amazed.<br \/>\nBefore them all Tobit proclaimed<br \/>\nhow God had mercifully restored sight to his eyes.<br \/>\nWhen Tobit reached Sarah, the wife of his son Tobiah,<br \/>\nhe greeted her: \u201cWelcome, my daughter!<br \/>\nBlessed be your God for bringing you to us, daughter!<br \/>\nBlessed is your father, and blessed is my son Tobiah,<br \/>\nand blessed are you, daughter!<br \/>\nWelcome to your home with blessing and joy.<br \/>\nCome in, daughter!\u201d<br \/>\nThat day there was joy for all the Jews who lived in Nineveh.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Responsorial Psalm\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/146:1\">PS 146:1B-2, 6C-7, 8-9A, 9BC-10<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">R.
