Landry<br \/>\nSacred Heart Convent of the Sisters of Life, Manhattan<br \/>\nFriday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time, Year II<br \/>\nJune 12, 2020<br \/>\n1 Kings 19:9.11-16, Ps 27, Mt 5:27-32<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>To listen to an audio recording of today\u2019s homily, please click below:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-19532-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/traffic.libsyn.com\/secure\/catholicpreaching\/6.12.20_Homily_1.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/traffic.libsyn.com\/secure\/catholicpreaching\/6.12.20_Homily_1.mp3\">https:\/\/traffic.libsyn.com\/secure\/catholicpreaching\/6.12.20_Homily_1.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The following points were attempted in the homily:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Today Jesus continues to sketch out for us how to live as his disciples, in communion with him who fulfills the law and seeks to help us fulfill the law by loving God with all we are and have and loving our neighbor as he loves us, by interiorizing the law of the Holy Spirit written on our hearts, so that our holiness might surpass that of the virtuous pagans and the scribes and the Pharisees and attain to the full stature of the holiness of Christ in a human being. Yesterday Jesus did so with regard to the fifth commandment. Today he will do so with regard to the sixth. But to understand what he will teach more deeply, let\u2019s begin with the Psalm.<\/li>\n<li>In the Responsorial Psalm, we pray, \u201cI long to see your face, O Lord,\u201d and that points to the <em>desire<\/em> that leads to <em>vision<\/em> that then transforms a <em>life<\/em>. We see two types of longing to see God in the readings today. The first is to see the Lord in prayer, which is the journey on which God led the Prophet Elijah in the first reading. Elijah, on Mt. Horeb, didn\u2019t find God in the various manifestations that Moses did when he was at the top of the mountain \u2014 in the howling wind, the earthquakes or the fire of a burning bush \u2014 but in the whisper of a gentle breeze. God doesn\u2019t always respond according to our expectations in granting the desires he plants within us to see Him.\u00a0He can sometimes come in the least suspecting ways. But when we long to see his face, we\u2019ll be able to find that face speaking to us even in something small like a gentle breeze.<\/li>\n<li>In the Gospel, we see that longing and vision on display in Jesus\u2019 words about adultery of the heart. He tells us that someone who has looked on a woman with lust has committed in his heart the sin of adultery.\u00a0Lust begins with an unholy longing in the heart that passes to what St. John Paul II called a type of porno-vision, when we seek to appropriate, possess, objectify, rather than love, serve and die for the one beheld. Lust changes the entire intentionality of a human person, St. John Paul II said, from a self-giver to a taker, from someone called to lay down his life out of love for others to someone who sacrifices someone else for his own pleasures. The righteousness Jesus wants of us begins with chaste longings and chaste looking, something that views the person as a whole, rather than objectifying and\u00a0abstracting the person\u2019s values through the prism of meeting one\u2019s desire or needs. Chastity, as John Paul II taught in his Theology of the Body, is linked to purity and to piety: purity allows us to \u201csee God\u201d (Mt 5:6) in others rather than make that person an idol, or idolize our own urges; piety allows us to reverence the God we see. Rather than the adulterous desiring and looking that Jesus says we should brutally root out of our life \u2014 with graphic language about plucking out eyes and chopping off hands \u2014 Jesus wants us to replace it with holy longing and vision that leads to a genuine love, which often involves forsaking human romantic love according to the other person\u2019s or to one\u2019s own situation in life. Adulterous desires, looks and actions are actually similarly adulterous in terms of our spousal Covenant with God, and God\u2019s righteousness \u2014 and the help of the Holy Spirit \u2014 call us to a different way of life.<\/li>\n<li>This longing to see God in prayer, in life, and in others is the essence of the consecrated life.\u00a0The motto of the consecrated life is \u201cFaciem tuam, Domine, requiram,\u201d \u201cI seek your face, O Lord!\u201d (Ps 27). Consecrated men and women seek God\u2019s face, they seek God, and they rejoice to the extent that they\u2019ve found him and been found by him in all aspects of their life. Their celibate chastity is a particularly important witness in an age that regularly gives into adultery in the heart. They show that the search for God\u2019s face, for God\u2019s love, is not in vain. If consecrated men and women can see God in others, including, as St. Teresa of Calcutta used to say, in the distressing disguise of the poor, then it can help husbands and wives, and future husbands and wives, see Him in each other.<\/li>\n<li>Today we come to find the Lord not in an earthquake, strong driving wind, or fire, but in the gentle whisper of the Word of God and under the appearance of simple Bread and Wine. God asks us, like he asked Elijah, \u201cWhy are you here?,\u201d and we respond that we\u2019ve come longing for him. He\u2019ll send us out not on a journey of nearly 1,000 miles from Mt. Horeb to Damascus, to complete our task as Elijah was sent to anoint kings and his prophetic successor, but out into the streets of Manhattan to complete the task he\u2019s given us today, as we seek to find him in the events and persons we encounter. The Lord indeed responds to our longing by allowing us to behold his humble face in the Eucharist and in the events of the day. May his pure longing and vision become our own!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The readings for today\u2019s Mass were:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Reading 1\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/1kings\/19:9\">1 KGS 19:9A, 11-16<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">At the mountain of God, Horeb,<br \/>\nElijah came to a cave, where he took shelter.<br \/>\nBut the word of the LORD came to him,<br \/>\n\u201cGo outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD;<br \/>\nthe LORD will be passing by.\u201d<br \/>\nA strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains<br \/>\nand crushing rocks before the LORD\u2014<br \/>\nbut the LORD was not in the wind.<br \/>\nAfter the wind there was an earthquake\u2014<br \/>\nbut the LORD was not in the earthquake.<br \/>\nAfter the earthquake there was fire\u2014<br \/>\nbut the LORD was not in the fire.<br \/>\nAfter the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.<br \/>\nWhen he heard this,<br \/>\nElijah hid his face in his cloak<br \/>\nand went and stood at the entrance of the cave.<br \/>\nA voice said to him, \u201cElijah, why are you here?\u201d<br \/>\nHe replied, \u201cI have been most zealous for the LORD,<br \/>\nthe God of hosts.<br \/>\nBut the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant,<br \/>\ntorn down your altars,<br \/>\nand put your prophets to the sword.<br \/>\nI alone am left, and they seek to take my life.\u201d<br \/>\nThe LORD said to him,<br \/>\n\u201cGo, take the road back to the desert near Damascus.<br \/>\nWhen you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king of Aram.<br \/>\nThen you shall anoint Jehu, son of Nimshi, as king of Israel,<br \/>\nand Elisha, son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah,<br \/>\nas prophet to succeed you.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Responsorial Psalm\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/27:7\">PS 27:7-8A, 8B-9ABC, 13-14<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">R.
