That\u2019s why, if in today\u2019s Gospel, he tells us that the path to greatness is to receive children in his name, that\u2019s because he himself has received us as children. We don\u2019t ponder Jesus\u2019 \u201cfatherhood\u201d enough because we always look at him as Son in relation to God the Father, but many Fathers of the Church looked at him as the icon of the Father and gives us life through his passion, death and resurrection and the sacraments that flow from them. He is the perfect reflection of the Father\u2019s paternity. He wishes to receive us as children. But the resistance we put up is to try to be grown-ups. That\u2019s the essential sin found in the Parable of the Prodigal Son: the younger son wants to treat the Father as if he\u2019s dead, as if he no longer needs him in his life. For us to become great, we first need to exercise our divine filiation to the full, allow Jesus to receive us as children, and then, learning from Jesus\u2019 love for us, similarly extend that same, loving, often unrequited gift of self to all those children of God sent to us.<\/li>\n<li>The one who shows us best how to do this is St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, whose feast the Church celebrates today. She became a doctor of the Church, even though she never graduated high school, because she was filled with Divine Wisdom and simplicity and showed us all how to respond to God like beloved children. She taught what she described as her little way of spiritual childhood, the little way of trust and love, by linking two passages in Sacred Scripture about the Kingdom of God. The first is that if we wish to enter the kingdom, we \u201cmust convert and become like little children.\u201d Paradoxically to grow in full stature in Christ is to become more childlike. The second passage is \u201cBlessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.\u201d The essence of spiritual childhood is spiritual poverty, totally dependence on God, approaching him in everything with open hands and recognizing that everything we\u2019ve received is a gift. At the beginning of Mass, that\u2019s what we prayed for: \u201cO God, who open your Kingdom to those who are humble and to little ones, lead us to follow trustingly in the little way of Saint Th\u00e9r\u00e8se, so that through her intercession, we may see your eternal glory revealed.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today\u2019s first reading from Job shows us a particular aspect of that way of spiritual childhood. After Job has lost all his oxen, asses, herdsman, sheep, shepherds, camels and those tendon them, sons, daughters and house \u2014 everything but his wife, health and life \u2014 his response was not to curse but to praise God: \u201cNaked I came forth from my mother\u2019s womb,\u00a0and naked shall I go back again.\u00a0The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;\u00a0blessed be the name of the Lord!\u201d The Lord should be blessed when he gives and when he strips. Spiritual childhood is a way of trust and love that recognizes that both things that seem propitious and adverse are meant to be united with God. It\u2019s easy to blessed God for the obvious gifts in life, like oxen, asses, herdsman, sheep, shepherds, camels and those tendon them, sons, daughters and houses. It\u2019s much harder when he takes them away. But that\u2019s what Job does.<\/li>\n<li>God often loves us by \u201csubtraction.\u201d This is what St. Therese once taught a novice who had sighed saying,\u201cWhen I think of everything I still have to acquire!\u201d Therese replied, \u201cYou mean, to lose! Jesus takes it upon himself to fill your soul in the measure that you rid it of its imperfections. I see that you have taken the wrong road; you will never arrive at the end of your journey. You are wanting to climb a great mountain and the good God is trying to make you descend it; he is waiting for you at the bottom in the fertile valley of humility.\u201d God often has us advance by means of taking things away so that he can become all in all. That\u2019s what he did in her life: taking away her mother when she was 4 and a half, taking away four of her siblings when they were babies, removing three sisters into the Carmel as she was a child, taking away her father\u2019s mind during the last few years of his life, taking away her health at the end of her life, removing any sensible faith through the dark night and so many more things. But these were all opportunities for Therese to grow in trust.<\/li>\n<li>Today we have the job to witness the renewal of vows of two Missionary Catechists of Saint Therese of the Infant Jesus, Mother Theodore Juan and Sister Lourdes Ocampo. They will renew today the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. For St. Therese, the vow of poverty was a means by which she could attach herself to Jesus as her true wealth; of chastity to Jesus as her true love; of obedience to Jesus\u2019 will as her own. All three were part of her vocation to be love in the heart of the Church. Through poverty, chastity and obedience, one is made capable of overcoming the selfish desires for money, sex and control so that one can actually give oneself away in love. We pray through her intercession for all Carmelites and for all Missionary Catechists of St. Therese that they may be renewed today in their union with the Poor, Chaste and Obedient Christ as they prepare to be united with him, as we do, in Holy Communion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>The readings for today\u2019s Mass were:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"cs_control_3684\" class=\"cs_control CS_Element_Textblock\">\n<div class=\"CS_Textblock_Text\">\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Reading 1 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/job\/1:6\">JB 1:6-22<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">One day, when the angels of God came to present themselves before the LORD,<br \/>\nSatan also came among them.<br \/>\nAnd the LORD said to Satan, \u201cWhence do you come?\u201d<br \/>\nThen Satan answered the LORD and said,<br \/>\n\u201cFrom roaming the earth and patrolling it.\u201d<br \/>\nAnd the LORD said to Satan, \u201cHave you noticed my servant Job,<br \/>\nand that there is no one on earth like him,<br \/>\nblameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?\u201d<br \/>\nBut Satan answered the LORD and said,<br \/>\n\u201cIs it for nothing that Job is God-fearing?<br \/>\nHave you not surrounded him and his family<br \/>\nand all that he has with your protection?<br \/>\nYou have blessed the work of his hands,<br \/>\nand his livestock are spread over the land.<br \/>\nBut now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has,<br \/>\nand surely he will blaspheme you to your face.\u201d<br \/>\nAnd the LORD said to Satan,<br \/>\n\u201cBehold, all that he has is in your power;<br \/>\nonly do not lay a hand upon his person.\u201d<br \/>\nSo Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.And so one day, while his sons and his daughters<br \/>\nwere eating and drinking wine<br \/>\nin the house of their eldest brother,<br \/>\na messenger came to Job and said,<br \/>\n\u201cThe oxen were ploughing and the asses grazing beside them,<br \/>\nand the Sabeans carried them off in a raid.<br \/>\nThey put the herdsmen to the sword,<br \/>\nand I alone have escaped to tell you.\u201d<br \/>\nWhile he was yet speaking, another came and said,<br \/>\n\u201cLightning has fallen from heaven<br \/>\nand struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them;<br \/>\nand I alone have escaped to tell you.\u201d<br \/>\nWhile he was yet speaking, another messenger came and said,<br \/>\n\u201cThe Chaldeans formed three columns,<br \/>\nseized the camels, carried them off,<br \/>\nand put those tending them to the sword,<br \/>\nand I alone have escaped to tell you.\u201d<br \/>\nWhile he was yet speaking, another came and said,<br \/>\n\u201cYour sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine<br \/>\nin the house of their eldest brother,<br \/>\nwhen suddenly a great wind came across the desert<br \/>\nand smote the four corners of the house.<br \/>\nIt fell upon the young people and they are dead;<br \/>\nand I alone have escaped to tell you.\u201d<br \/>\nThen Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair.<br \/>\nHe cast himself prostrate upon the ground, and said,\u201dNaked I came forth from my mother\u2019s womb,<br \/>\nand naked shall I go back again.<br \/>\nThe LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;<br \/>\nblessed be the name of the LORD!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In all this Job did not sin,<br \/>\nnor did he say anything disrespectful of God.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"cs_control_228452\" class=\"cs_control CS_Element_Textblock\">\n<div class=\"CS_Textblock_Text\">\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Responsorial Psalm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/bible\/psalms\/17:1\">PS 17:1BCD, 2-3, 6-7<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">R.
