Reading 1 ACTS 12:1-11<\/a><\/h4>\n
In those days, King Herod laid hands upon some members of the Church to harm them.
\nHe had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword,
\nand when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews
\nhe proceeded to arrest Peter also.
\n\u2013It was the feast of Unleavened Bread.\u2013
\nHe had him taken into custody and put in prison
\nunder the guard of four squads of four soldiers each.
\nHe intended to bring him before the people after Passover.
\nPeter thus was being kept in prison,
\nbut prayer by the Church was fervently being made
\nto God on his behalf.<\/p>\n

On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial,
\nPeter, secured by double chains,
\nwas sleeping between two soldiers,
\nwhile outside the door guards kept watch on the prison.
\nSuddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him
\nand a light shone in the cell.
\nHe tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying,
\n\u201cGet up quickly.\u201d
\nThe chains fell from his wrists.
\nThe angel said to him, \u201cPut on your belt and your sandals.\u201d
\nHe did so.
\nThen he said to him, \u201cPut on your cloak and follow me.\u201d
\nSo he followed him out,
\nnot realizing that what was happening through the angel was real;
\nhe thought he was seeing a vision.
\nThey passed the first guard, then the second,
\nand came to the iron gate leading out to the city,
\nwhich opened for them by itself.
\nThey emerged and made their way down an alley,
\nand suddenly the angel left him.
\nThen Peter recovered his senses and said,
\n\u201cNow I know for certain
\nthat the Lord sent his angel
\nand rescued me from the hand of Herod
\nand from all that the Jewish people had been expecting.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I, Paul, am already being poured out like a libation,
\nand the time of my departure is at hand.
\nI have competed well; I have finished the race;
\nI have kept the faith.
\nFrom now on the crown of righteousness awaits me,
\nwhich the Lord, the just judge,
\nwill award to me on that day, and not only to me,
\nbut to all who have longed for his appearance.<\/p>\n

The Lord stood by me and gave me strength,
\nso that through me the proclamation might be completed
\nand all the Gentiles might hear it.
\nAnd I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
\nThe Lord will rescue me from every evil threat
