Last Monday, through the Book of Leviticus, God called us to &#8220;be holy, as I, the Lord your God, am holy.&#8221; On Saturday, Jesus called us to &#8220;be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.&#8221; Today Jesus focuses that holiness and becoming perfected in his called for us to &#8220;be merciful as your Father in heaven is merciful,&#8221; which means, ultimately, to love others as God has loved us. God is merciful love (hesed) and he who is rich in mercy wants to help us to become not only rich through our receiving that mercy but richer still in our sharing it. Jesus gives us the path to be merciful in the commands he gives us immediately afterward. He tells us not to judge, not to condemn, to forgive and to give generously, each of which is an expression of merciful love first. God has given us his mercy and seeks to transform us in mercy so that we may treat others with abundant mercy, promising us, &#8220;The measure with which you measure\u00a0will in return be measured out to you.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today on the fourth anniversary of the election of Pope Francis, we can ponder God&#8217;s call to mercy. Pope Francis&#8217; motto \u2014 <em>miserando atque eligendo<\/em> \u2014 points to his calling as a 16 year old, that when God forgives us, he calls us to become sharers of his mercy. Mercy is the essence of the Gospel, he has said, and God&#8217;s greatest joy.<\/li>\n<li>We can focus on two applications of this truth that Pope Francis has shared with us in the last four years. The first is with his words on the plane back from Rio, &#8220;Who am I to judge?&#8221; He was speaking about a converted priest who was running the residence where he lives, but the reason why those words became so famous is because many of those outside the Church believe that the Church routinely violates Jesus&#8217; words today and, rather than being merciful, judges everyone, that we give sinners a scarlet letter, that even if a person is sacrificing all types of hours caring for sick relatives, if the person is married outside of the Church, the person is simply &#8220;living in sin&#8221; period, as if that one objectively\u00a0sinful condition\u00a0summarizes the entirety of person&#8217;s life. Pope Francis, through the Jubilee of Mercy, through his own actions, has been trying to change the reputation of the Church and the attitudes of those in the Church, so that sinners will first know us by the merciful love we have for them rather than for judging them, so that we can love them back to the faith with a warm heart, back to receiving God&#8217;s mercy and converting, rather than shame them back to the faith with a wagging finger.<\/li>\n<li>The second thing that Pope Francis teaches us about this passage is about how to overcome the temptation to judge others. He says it&#8217;s by uniting ourselves to sinners, recognizing that we&#8217;re sinners, too, and beating our breasts for our own sins and doing reparation for our sins and the sins of others. Two years ago on the second Monday of Lent,\u00a0Pope Francis took up this theme in his morning homily at the St. Martha Domus in the Vatican. He said that we can only progress on our Christian journey in life to become like God if we are capable of judging ourselves first. \u201cWe are all sinners,\u201d he said, \u201cnot in theory but in reality,\u201d but we need the ability to judge ourselves to be sinners in need of God\u2019s mercy. We need to say, \u201cI accuse myself!\u201d We need to pray, as we do at the beginning of each Mass, \u201cI have greatly sinned \u2026 by my own \u2026 most grievous fault.\u201d Pope Francis says that many of us spend time judging others rather than accusing ourselves. \u201cWe are all masters, professors of self-justification: \u2018No it wasn\u2019t me, it\u2019s not my fault.\u2019 \u2026 We all have an alibi to explain away our shortcomings, our sins, and we are often to put on a face that says \u2018I do not know,\u2019 a face that says \u2018I didn\u2019t do it, maybe someone else did,\u2019 an innocent face. This is no way to lead a Christian life.\u201d He continued, \u201cIt\u2019s easier to blame others\u201d\u00a0but\u00a0something important\u00a0happens when\u00a0\u201cwe begin to look at the things we are capable of doing: at first we &#8216;feel bad, we feel disgusted,&#8217; yet this in turn &#8216;gives us peace and makes us healthy.'&#8221; The Pope said, \u201cIf we do not learn this first step in life, we will never, never be able to take other steps on the road of our Christian life, of our spiritual life.\u00a0The first step is to judge ourselves. Without saying anything out loud. Between you and your conscience. Walking down the street, I pass by a prison and say: \u2018Well, they deserve it\u2019 \u2013 Yet do you know that if it weren\u2019t for the grace of God you would be there? Did you ever think that you are capable of doing the things that they have done, even worse? This is what judging yourself means, not hiding from the roots of sin that are in all of us, the many things we are capable of doing, even if we cannot seen them.\u201d\u00a0Once we begin to judge ourselves as the sinners we are, we can open ourselves to God\u2019s mercy because we\u2019ll recognize how much and why we need it. C.S. Lewis once said that the two essential truths of Christianity are that we\u2019re sinners and that Jesus has come to save us from our sins. We can\u2019t appreciate God\u2019s mercy unless we recognize how desperate we are for it. And once we recognize how much we need it, then we can be compassionate on others who need it to. The way we stop judging and condemning others is when we recognize that but for God\u2019s grace we would be under the very same judgment and condemnation because we, too, are sinners who have murdered Christ through our sins just as much as others have.<\/li>\n<li>But while judging ourselves instead of others is the first step, it\u2019s not the last. The second step is a capacity to do reparation for our sins and the sins of others. One of the greatest aspects of the Divine Mercy Devotion requested by Jesus through St. Faustina is that we beg God the Father for mercy \u201cin expiation for our sins and those of the whole world.\u201d We see through judging ourselves that we\u2019re all in a similar boat and hence we pray for our sins and those of others. That\u2019s what we see the Prophet Daniel and the Psalmist doing today. Daniel was a prophet in Babylon and was certainly not guilty of all of the sins that brought the people into exile. But yet he prayed in their name to the Lord with the first person plural. He was praying for his sins and everyone\u2019s, because they were all contributing factors leading to the exile. He implored, \u201cWe have sinned, been wicked and done evil;\u00a0we have rebelled and departed from your commandments and your laws.\u00a0We have not obeyed your servants the prophets,\u00a0who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes,\u00a0our fathers, and all the people of the land.\u00a0Justice, O Lord, is on your side \u2014 [in other words, we have no excuses!] \u2014 \u00a0we are shamefaced even to this day:\u00a0we, the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem,\u00a0and all Israel, near and far,\u00a0in all the countries to which you have scattered them\u00a0because of their treachery toward you.\u00a0O Lord, we are shamefaced, like our kings, our princes, and our fathers,\u00a0for having sinned against you. \u2026 We\u00a0rebelled against you\u00a0and paid no heed to your command, O Lord, our God,\u00a0to live by the law you gave us through your servants the prophets.\u201d That was a forceful collective self-accusation. He wasn\u2019t apologizing for the sins of \u201cothers\u201d in the third person, but for all the sins, including himself among the sinners.\u00a0But he didn\u2019t lose hope because of those sins. That\u2019s why he prayed, \u201cBut yours, O Lord, our God, are compassion and forgiveness!\u201d God\u2019s nature is to be merciful. And it was the same sentiment that led us to cry out with the Psalmist, \u201cLord, do not deal with us according to our sins.\u201d We prayed in the verses of the Psalm, \u201cRemember not against us the iniquities of the past;\u00a0may your compassion quickly come to us,\u00a0for we are brought very low.\u00a0Help us, O God our savior,\u00a0because of the glory of your name;\u00a0Deliver us and pardon our sins\u00a0for your name\u2019s sake.\u201d Notice that there\u2019s no sense of entitlement in this prayer. But we are asking God to forgive us because of his merciful and glorious name, he who is kind and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love. We don\u2019t deserve forgiveness, but God extends it nevertheless because that\u2019s who he is.<\/li>\n<li>This judging of ourselves and praying in collective reparation are two great lessons for us to learn in Lent. We\u2019re called sincerely to beat our breasts and come to confession, accusing ourselves, not excusing ourselves, of the ways by thought, word, deed and omission we have not lived in communion with God. And we\u2019re called to do reparation for our and others\u2019 sins, because there\u2019s much to repair in our families, parish, communities, nation and world. There is so much for which we need to say, \u201cSorry, Lord!\u201d and \u201cDo not treat us as our sins deserve,\u201d the sins of abortion, the deconstruction of the family, hardness of heart toward Christ in the disguise of immigrants and the poor, taking the Lord for granted even on the Lord\u2019s day, the murder of so many people for various reasons, and so many other grievous sins. We begin him to bring his compassion quickly to us because we have been brought very low.<\/li>\n<li>And God hears that prayer. Today at Mass he enfleshes his Mercy in the person of his Son, whom we\u2019re about to receive. God the Father doesn\u2019t treat us as our sins deserve, but treats us with the love he has for his Son who gave his life in justice and mercy to save our own, and now gives us the Gift of gifts &#8220;packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, \u2026\u00a0poured into&#8221; our lives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The readings for today\u2019s Mass were:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Reading 1\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/daniel\/9:4\">DN 9:4B-10<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\u201cLord, great and awesome God,<br \/>\nyou who keep your merciful covenant toward those who love you<br \/>\nand observe your commandments!<br \/>\nWe have sinned, been wicked and done evil;<br \/>\nwe have rebelled and departed from your commandments and your laws.<br \/>\nWe have not obeyed your servants the prophets,<br \/>\nwho spoke in your name to our kings, our princes,<br \/>\nour fathers, and all the people of the land.<br \/>\nJustice, O Lord, is on your side;<br \/>\nwe are shamefaced even to this day:<br \/>\nwe, the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem,<br \/>\nand all Israel, near and far,<br \/>\nin all the countries to which you have scattered them<br \/>\nbecause of their treachery toward you.<br \/>\nO LORD, we are shamefaced, like our kings, our princes, and our fathers,<br \/>\nfor having sinned against you.<br \/>\nBut yours, O Lord, our God, are compassion and forgiveness!<br \/>\nYet we rebelled against you<br \/>\nand paid no heed to your command, O LORD, our God,<br \/>\nto live by the law you gave us through your servants the prophets.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Responsorial Psalm\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/79:8\">PS 79:8, 9, 11 AND 13<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">R.
