At his conversion, which happened as he was injured in a terrible fall from a horse during a storm, the Lord spoke to him saying \u201cTurn from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it.\u201d That\u2019s what he did. After his conversion, and precisely learning from his formerly worldly ways, he would call others to \u201clive according to the norms of the Scriptures with Christ as their model.\u201d That\u2019s a fitting summary of his life. That\u2019s a fitting summary of the Christian life. That\u2019s a key to understand today\u2019s readings, especially the Gospel, in which Christ gives us the summit of Scriptural focus on the Christian life in the Beatitudes and then enfleshes them in his own way of life.<\/li>\n<li>In the Beatitudes, we have Christ\u2019s own proclamation of the state of blessedness, which is not necessarily coextensive with the subjective state of happiness. In them, Jesus calls those in various particular conditions \u201cblessed,\u201d and then he takes about a corresponding reward. It\u2019s noteworthy that Jesus didn\u2019t say, \u201cBlessed are those praying everyday, who are fasting, tithing, regularly going to worship.\u201d All of those would make sense. He actually blesses situations that in the mindset of the world might seem like curses. And, with one exception, he proclaims\u00a0\u201cfuture\u201d rather than \u201cpresent\u201d rewards \u2014 using the future verb tense \u2014 meaning that even those who are in such situations may not realize how blessed they indeed are.\n<ul>\n<li>He pronounces blessed\u00a0those who are\u00a0poor in spirit, which doesn\u2019t mean merely detached, but means they are so poor they don\u2019t even own their \u201cspirit,\u201d but need God to give them every breath. Jesus says that theirs \u201cis\u201d the kingdom of heaven, because they\u2019re already living in a state in which they relate every inhalation to God\u2019s providence.<\/li>\n<li>He says we\u2019re blessed when we mourn, because then he comes to console us in our desolation.<\/li>\n<li>He declares we\u2019re blessed when we\u2019re meek, which is not weak, but a form of courage that, conscious that we will inherit all God\u2019s inheritance, we don\u2019t have to respond with anger and retaliation to every provocation.<\/li>\n<li>He states that we\u2019re blessed when we\u2019re hungering and thirsting for holiness, for being in a right relationship with God and with others, for others\u2019 having their rights respected, because in that spiritual starvation and parched situation God can fill us with his living water and his nourishment.<\/li>\n<li>He announces that the merciful are blessed, because they\u2019re like the Father, and will open themselves up to receive the fullness of his merciful love.<\/li>\n<li>He proclaims that the clean of heart are blessed because they see God. The way we become pure in heart is by keeping our eyes on Christ and purifying ourselves of all other distractions.<\/li>\n<li>The peacemakers are likewise blessed because they\u2019re behaving as children of God and will so be regarded.<\/li>\n<li>And most paradoxically of all, Jesus says that those who are persecuted, insulted, and calumniated are blessed and will have a great reward in heaven because they will experience a union with the prophets and even with Jesus before them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>None of these states seems particularly blessed on earth. They indicate things opposite to the path many in the world take. But Jesus lived all of them and is asking us to align our lives with the state of blessedness in this world, the state that allows us to enter much more into God\u2019s life, mind and ways.<\/li>\n<li>The Prophet Elijah is one who did. He was persecuted for the sake of righteousness and multiple times needed to flee, as God instructed him to do in today\u2019s first reading. But it was there that he was able to become poor in spirit, being fed by the water of the Wadi Cherith and eating the meager portions brought to him by ravens.<\/li>\n<li>To help us, God gives us something greater than what he provided Elijah. He gives us his son\u2019s Body as our meat and his Blood as our drink, to strengthen us for a task even greater than that given to Elijah, to enflesh Christ\u2019s own way of life in the Beatitudes and to show the world, as St. Norbert did, how to live in accordance with the Scriptures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The readings for today\u2019s Mass were:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Reading 1\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/1kings\/17:1\">1 KGS 17:1-6<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab:<br \/>\n\u201cAs the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve,<br \/>\nduring these years there shall be no dew or rain except at my word.\u201d<br \/>\nThe LORD then said to Elijah:<br \/>\n\u201cLeave here, go east<br \/>\nand hide in the Wadi Cherith, east of the Jordan.<br \/>\nYou shall drink of the stream,<br \/>\nand I have commanded ravens to feed you there.\u201d<br \/>\nSo he left and did as the LORD had commanded.<br \/>\nHe went and remained by the Wadi Cherith, east of the Jordan.<br \/>\nRavens brought him bread and meat in the morning,<br \/>\nand bread and meat in the evening,<br \/>\nand he drank from the stream.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bibleReadingsWrapper\">\n<h4>Responsorial Psalm\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/121:1\">PS 121:1BC-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">R.
