I’m Monsignor Roger Landry, national director of the Pontifical l Mission Societies, coming to you from this beautiful altar of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in the ravine of the shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs in Auriesville, New York. It’s somewhere around here that the body of St. Rene Goupil was buried by St. Isaac Jogues in 1642. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is preparing us for the end of our life and the end of time. He says first that there are going to be lots of things occurring that there will be wars and insurrections. There’s going to be great moral disturbances as hatred rules. And then he says even the heavens are going to be quaking. There are going to be earthquakes and there are going to be lots of natural disasters and catastrophes and some people are going to be so afraid they will die of fright. But then he tells us how to respond. When you see these things happening, he says, “Stand up, stand erect, and raise your head for your salvation is near at hand.” Because that’s when Jesus is coming. Every day, if we look at the newspapers, what do we see? We have tales of wars and insurrections. Every day, we read of one natural disaster here or elsewhere. What does that mean for us? That every day is a day in which we’re supposed to be stand up. We’re supposed to stand erect, lift up our hearts, lift up our minds because our savior’s coming for us that very day. There’s not one day where Jesus the king doesn’t come to invite us more deeply into his kingdom. That is the message that St. Rene Goupil and St. Isaac Jogues together with and all the North American martyrs brought to North America in the 1600s. That’s the message that missionaries still crisscross the globe to bring to the 5.5 out of the 8.1 billion people who don’t yet know Jesus as their savior. That’s what our Lady, Queen of Martyrs, Queen of Apostle of all missionaries is asking us each to grasp, to live, and to share. Today, let’s lift up our heads, stand erect, and greet our savior who comes to us. And then let us use whatever the lord has given us to help others recognize that the savior is coming for them, too. And embrace him with the love he desires and deserves. God bless you.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,
know that its desolation is at hand.
Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.
Let those within the city escape from it,
and let those in the countryside not enter the city,
for these days are the time of punishment
when all the Scriptures are fulfilled.
Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days,
for a terrible calamity will come upon the earth
and a wrathful judgment upon this people.
They will fall by the edge of the sword
and be taken as captives to all the Gentiles;
and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles
until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
“There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars,
and on earth nations will be in dismay,
perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves.
People will die of fright
in anticipation of what is coming upon the world,
for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
And then they will see the Son of Man
coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
But when these signs begin to happen,
stand erect and raise your heads
because your redemption is at hand.”
