I’m Monsignor Roger Landry, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies, here before this beautiful statue of St. Anne in the monastery dedicated to St. Anne in the heart of Poland. Today, July 26th, we celebrate Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of God, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We ask their prayers in a special way on this World Day of Prayer for all Grandparents. In today’s gospel, Jesus says the words, “Blessed are your eyes. For so many long to see what you see, but didn’t see it. And your ears, for so many long to hear what you hear, but didn’t hear it.” Joachim and Anne longed for their savior. Little did they know that he would be their own grandkid. We have the opportunity to live in our life in communion with Jesus. Let’s give God incredible thanks for them today. And let’s likewise pray for missionaries that they will be able to bring Jesus through the intercession of the grandparents of God to all those people so that their eyes can see the lamb of God in the holy eucharist taking away the sins of the world and can hear his holy word proclaimed by missionaries, proclaimed by the church in every liturgy. God bless you.

The Gospel reading on which the reflection was based was:

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Blessed are your eyes, because they see,
and your ears, because they hear.
Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people
longed to see what you see but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”
