The following points were made for this homily for Tuesday of the 20th Week of Ordinary Time, Year I:

  • The vocation story of Gideon shows how the last shall be first and the first shall be last. It puts our own specific vocations within the vocation to holiness and fidelity into context.
  • St. Bernard of Clairvaux’s vocation story shows the great reward of leaving so many of the blessings of the world for the even greater blessing of following the Lord up close.
  • In order to fit through the eye of the needle into the kingdom, we need to imitate the lessons we learn in their lives and, unlike the Rich Young Man, let go of what we grasp onto that cannot fit through the gate of faith.
